Mayor unveils new plans for Louis Armstrong Airport

NEW ORLEANS - The Louis Armstrong International Airport is getting a major facelift as part of what the mayor is calling "the most transformative project for New Orleans since the Superdome."

Mayor Mitch Landrieu unveiled plans today for a new terminal, now known as the North Terminal, at the Louis Armstrong Airport that he says will bring in billions in revenue every year and create over 13,000 jobs. "We did the hard work, leveraged our relationships with federal, state and local partners, and today a financially feasible, world-class airport is on the way," Landrieu said.

Conceptual renderings for the North Terminal show a 650,000-square-foot complex with two concourses and 30 gates.

The $826 million plan includes a power plant project, an addition to I-10 to improve access to the airport and an on-sire hotel.

The project's construction is projected to bring in $1.7 billion for the local economy and once complete, the terminal itself is projected to bring in $3.2 a year according to Landrieu.

The Federal Aviation Administration performed an Environmental Assessment in connection with the proposed North Terminal and determined that the new terminal would not significantly affect environmental resources in the area.

There is no monetary investment from the City of New Orleans for this project. Funding for the North Terminal will come from FAA AIP grants, TSA grants, Louisiana State Aviation Trust Fund grants, PFC collections, General Airport Revenue Bonds and Aviation Board Capital Funds.

Louis Armstrong International Airport had over 9 million passengers in 2013.
