Report sheds new light on crash that killed St. Charles deputy

A St. Charles Parish deputy killed in a car wreck was going almost 60 miles over the speed limit right before the fatal crash.

According to an official report obtained by FOX 8, Deputy Jeff Watson was responding to a call for assistance from a fellow deputy in Luling Aug. 4. The report says Watson was going 90 mph in a 35 mph zone on Paul Maillard Road when he struck a pickup truck turning at an intersection.

Watson slammed head-on into an SUV, which was then rear-ended by a motorcycle.

The report also clarifies at what point Watson activated his emergency lights, indicating he did so less than a second before the crash.

The deputy was not wearing his seat belt and died at the scene.

Police booked the driver of the truck he hit with DWI, saying 56-year-old Dallas Veillon had a blood alcohol level of .10. However, according to the report, State Police didn't cite alcohol as a factor in the crash.

A St. Charles Parish grand jury decided last month that there is enough evidence to move forward with DWI charges against Veillon, but did not indict him for vehicular manslaughter in Watson's death.
