Crew member disappears from ship, police suspect foul play

Updated:

BRAITHWAITE, LA (WVUE) - Police believe foul play was involved in the disappearance of a crew member onboard a bulk carrier anchored in the Mississippi River.

Chief Officer Igor Yavorskyy went missing after being ordered by the ship's captain to conduct a deck sweep of the vessel. Police say Yavorskyy allegedly investigated an incident of intoxicated crew mates while performing his sweep. A red, blood-like substance was then found by a contract worker and reported to the captain. A count of all personnel aboard the ship was conducted and it was discovered that Yavorskyy was missing.

Police have not been able to locate Yavorskyy so far, but during their investigation possible blood evidence was found on crew members' clothing and in their living quarters.

Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Officer detectives, with the assistance of FBI New Orleans, are presently conducting interviews with crew members.

The PPSO is also being assisted in the investigation by the Plaquemines Parish Port Authority, United States Coast Guard Sector New Orleans, United States Coast Guard Investigative Service Gulf Region and the United States Customs and Border Protection.

The PPSO is urging anyone with information on this incident or who may know the whereabouts of Mr. Yavorskyy to contact the Sheriff's Office at 504-564-2525.

Crimestoppers is offering a reward up to $2,500 for information pertaining to this investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111 or toll free at (877) 903-STOP.
