The incident began Tuesday night around 8:40 at Brother's Food Mart on Airline Highway when officers approached two suspect in a car during a narcotics investigation.

The officer had the passenger door of the car open while attempting to remove the keys from the ignition. It was at that moment that the driver of the car, identified as 31 year-old Eldrin Smart, tried to flee the scene.

While wrestling for the keys, the officer fell into the car. Smart began beating the officer.
