NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal has declared a state of emergency due to frigid temperatures. Friday's declaration expands on an emergency order Jindal signed a day earlier to allow for the uninterrupted delivery of propane and heating fuels.
The newest declaration authorizes state government departments to take actions deemed necessary to deal with the cold. Icing on bridges and overpasses led authorities to close numerous roads around the state Friday morning, including the Causeway over Lake Pontchartrain and the elevated portion of Interstate 49 through Alexandria.
State police worked several major accidents Friday with at least one person killed in the Lake Charles area. Another accident on Interstate 49 northbound at La. Highway 29 in St. Landry Parish closed northbound lanes for several hours.
