One-alarm blaze destroys Slidell home

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -- The Slidell Fire Department responded to a one-alarm blaze, Saturday, that destroyed a home. The fire occurred around 7:45 a.m. in the 3000 block of S. Palm Drive.

Slidell fire officials say that responding firefighters arrived on scene to find the attic of the home on fire. The home's smoke detectors alerted the family and they were able to exit the house while a neighbor called 911. Over half of the home was damaged by fire and the remainder was destroyed by heat and smoke damage.

Investigators say that the fire started on the back deck of the home by heat lamps. The lamps were being used to protect plants from the cold weather. Investigators believe that there was a possible electrical short.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control at 8:52 a.m. The Red Cross is providing assistance to the family.
