SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) - Weather forecasts predict freezing temperatures today with sleet and ice developing tonight with the possibility of an inch of snow. The snow and sleet make for hazardous driving conditions.
Mayor Drennan, Police Chief Smith and the Slidell City Council are strongly urging citizens to stay at home and off the streets. Citizens should stock up on food, blankets and emergency supplies and prepare for possible power outages.
There will be a hard freeze tonight and tomorrow night, so citizens should wrap their pipes to prevent them from bursting.
Public Operations resanded 26 bridges in the City limits early this morning. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will salt overpasses as ice and sleet develops. Citizens are strongly encouraged to stay off the roads during the winter storm
CLECO has 600 crewmen on call to assist with power outages.
The Slidell Municipal Airport will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday and will resume operation on Thursday, Jan. 30.
The St. Tammany Parish Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, in conjunction with the City of Slidell and the Red Cross, opened a warming shelter at the John Slidell Park gymnasium, located at 105 Robert Blvd. in Slidell. The shelter will remain open through Thursday, Jan. 30 at 8 a.m. Citizens will be provided with a cot and two blankets, and are encouraged to bring extra blankets and bedding, comfort items for children, toiletries, and snacks, food and water. Pets are not allowed.
Progressive Waste garbage pickup in the City of Slidell is cancelled for Tuesday and Wednesday and will resume on Thursday, January 30. Please bring in your garbage cans and recycle bins and secure them.
The Slidell City Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 28 will be postponed to Thursday, Jan. 30 at 6:30 p.m. in the Slidell City Council Chambers.
The community meeting to discuss the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market on Robert Rd. has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 4 at 6 p.m. in the Slidell City Council Chambers.
St. Tammany Parish Public Schools and Catholic Schools are closed today and on Wednesday, January 29, due to winter weather.
