Residents cope with busted pipes after freezing weather

Updated:

COVINGTON, LA (WVUE) - The sun quickly melted any lingering ice outside Caretta's Grill, but behind the restaurant, the warmup revealed a big problem.

"As soon as I arrived to the restaurant, the very first thing that I need to do is check everything, if everything was ok," says manager Julio Cardoza. "That's when I noticed we have a water problem."

Pipes on the roof froze and burst sometime in the last two days, leaving little water flowing into the restaurant.

Cardoza called Goodbee Plumbing, a company that's had a lot of business in the past month.

"I think this round, it's a little bit more widespread," says master plumber Scott Harrison. "I think what happened is the freeze, it stayed below that critical temperature during the day this time, and people aren't really used to running their water during the day, and I think that explains some of it."

Harrison has been in the business 20 years but can't remember a time with back-to-back hard freezes.

This time, he says, the calls for help are coming from all over the Northshore.

"Bush, Covington, Mandeville, Madisonville, Folsom," he says.

He had 17 more calls to get to after he finished at the restaurant.

Harrison says even though we don't get cold weather often, it's important for all homes and businesses in the area to have a freeze plan.

"Much like hurricane preparedness, when the freezes come, you should have something where everybody in the family knows what needs to be done and what's happening," he says. "We'd expect if you have a raised house, you're going to have probably a different plan than somebody who's in the slab house."

Cardoza says he left a faucet running at the restaurant but that wasn't enough.

After two days closed because of the winter weather, he says it's good to be open again.

"I hope that everybody else got everything up and running with their water lines and hopefully everybody's gonna have the business up and running, the way it's supposed to be," he says.
