Corrections department says it has execution drugs
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The corrections department says it has the two drugs needed to execute a DeSoto Parish man next week by lethal injection.
Christopher Sepulvado is scheduled to be executed Feb. 5 for the 1992 murder of his 6-year-old stepson.
Louisiana's corrections department announced this week it was changing its execution process to a two-drug method used in Ohio, after trouble purchasing another lethal injection drug.
Pam Laborde, a corrections department spokeswoman, said Friday the agency's two pharmacies commonly carry the drugs used in the new lethal injection plan and has sufficient supplies.
Sepulvado's lawyers are asking a federal judge and the U.S. Supreme Court to stop the plans. They say the two-drug combination increases the risk of painful death and could violate Sepulvado's constitutional right against cruel and unusual punishment.
