Gusman, Foti headed to runoff in sheriff's race

Updated:

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Their ads caught voters attention and likely helped force a runoff in the race for sheriff.

The current man in charge of Orleans Parish Prison, Marlon Gusman, will face the facility's former leader Charles Foti, March 15th.

Voters have another six weeks to hear from both sides and decide who should be in charge when the new prison facility opens later this year.

University of New Orleans political scientist Ed Chervenak says Foti faces the tougher battle in the runoff election because Gusman nearly won outright.

One thing did surprise him about Saturday night's race.

"When I looked at the numbers, there really wasn't a lot of roll off from the mayoral election," he says. "Like basically a thousand fewer people voted in the sheriff's race than the mayor's race, which was kind of atypical because you would have assumed that people would have been turned off by some of the criticisms and negative ads in the sheriff's contest."

There could be more ads in the weeks ahead.

Both men told FOX 8 Saturday night, they're ready for the next round.

"We're right there on the verge and we're ready to push it over," says Gusman.

"I think we'll talk about the issues, we'll talk about what has happened, what can happen and what should happen," Foti says.
