NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE)- The Arc of Greater New Orleans wants your stash of old Carnival beads.

"We've never really had this problem before," said Margie Perez, recycling coordinator for the Arc's Mardi Gras Recycle Center. "Normally, we find ourselves with a lot of beads that need to be sorted at this time, but this year we've had such a tremendous outpouring of volunteers, we've run out of beads and need to find more, and soon."

The organization collects used beads all year and stores them in a warehouse. The Arc employs people with intellectual disabilities. They work with volunteers to sort and repackage the beads to sell to float riders. They've already run out of this year's supply of donated beads.

Perez says Arc workers last year sorted 120,000 pounds of beads. The proceeds from the sale help pay those workers. With no more beads to sort, both the work and the paychecks will dry up.

If you would like to donate beads you can drop them off at any of the Arc's centers. You will also find Arc recycle bins at a number of other locations.
