WOODRUFF, SC (WHNS)- A new phone scam could get you a hefty cell phone bill and an ear full on the other end of the line.

It's called the "One Ring" scam. Scammers only ring once, disconnect, and then wait for cell phone users to call the number back. The numbers usually come from islands like Grenada, the British Virgin Islands and Antigua.

One woman received two strange phone calls, but before she called back, she called her cell phone provider.

"I called Verizon's customer service and they said that it is not real, do not call back," said Shanna Hadden.

The Better Business Bureau says whoever calls back is charged a hefty amount: $19.95 for the international call, then an additional $9 per minute. The lure is that many times callers are connected to an overseas adult entertainment service.

"Do your research - when in doubt, check 'em out," said Vee Daniel, of the Better Business Bureau.

Common area codes to look out for are 268, 809, 876, 284 and 473.

If you get a call like this, contact the Better Business Bureau.
