NOPD recruitment website a success, Serpas says

Updated:

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - New Orleans Police Chief Ronal Serpas says a new recruiting effort is working well.

He says the website joinnopd.org has received more than 24,000 visits since it was launched in July. Much of the website traffic is coming from New Orleans, but hundreds of hits came from other cities, including San Antonio, Atlanta, New York and Houston.

Serpas said 2,500 people downloaded applications from the site, and he's  anxious to get new people in the uniform.

"Recruitment is the most important thing we can do outside of crime-fighting," he said. "We need to replenish the ranks of the NOPD. The Council approved, the budget's been approved that we can hire 150 people. We're well on our way, but the most important message to get out is we are hiring, we are hiring aggressively and we are hiring continually."

Serpas said the department currently has 1,174 officers. He'd like to have 1,500  to 1,600 on the force.
