Mother describes being robbed outside home in front of her 2 young sons

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - A man robbed a mother and her two sons outside their Fountainbleau home as they exited their car Wednesday. The woman said she used her training and her past experience to stay calm.

For her protection, FOX 8 is concealing the victim's identity.

"It was a horrible situation," the victim said. "I was furious and scared and pissed off and just so many emotions ran through me all at once."

She was just arriving home from work at 7 p.m. and, she said, right as her 4- and 6-year-old boys jumped out of the car heading towards the house, her car door swung open.

"I was a little bit more like you've got to be kidding me right now. This can't be happening, I'm at home in front of my house, I'm not even out of my car yet. What is happening right now," said the victim.

She said a man blocked her from exiting her car. She described the man to police as someone between 20 and 30 years old who was wearing a navy blue wind breaker with the hood on his head, dark pants, and dark tennis shoes.

"He said, 'don't make me shoot you, and give me everything,'" said the victim.

She says she handed everything over, including her purse and her keys.

"There wasn't anything that I had that was worth my life or putting my children in any harm's way. It's not worth it," said the victim.

Taking that defensive step is what she promotes. The victim says she teaches self-defense classes and knew to try and stay calm.

On top of that, she has unfortunately had previous experience dealing with robbers. She says she was held at gunpoint in September of 2011 when leaving work in the French Quarter, but this time was much worse.

"I was in front of my house with my children - that's way scarier to me," she said.

Her neighbors said the neighborhood association has been pushing for more crime cameras in the area.

"You think that you're safe, and I guess until something actually happens to you, you don't really know exactly what it feels like, but considering it was literally right across the street it doesn't get much closer to home then that. So, it's a little disturbing," said Ross Razin, a neighbor.

Though much of the area recently got newer, brighter street lights - which help - the victim says the light doesn't reach her block. Now her kids will have to live with the dark memories.

"I mean, they didn't necessarily see him with a gun but they saw him run away with my purse and they already, I mean they told their teacher at school that I was robbed. So they're very aware and that's the part that gets me the most," said the victim.
