Former Mayor Ray Nagin did not have much to say as he walked away from federal court on Wednesday, a convicted criminal.

He only said he maintained his innocence.

Nagin, or someone posing as him, communicated a longer message through the former mayor's  Twitter account on Thursday.  At approximately 9:20 a.m., Nagin tweeted "Prayin 4 pros, gov wits jurors.  God still in control.  Smokie Noful – I understand."  A YouTube link to Smokie Norful's "I Understand" is also attached.

The Reverand W.R. "Smokie" Norful is a grammy award winning gospel singer.

The lyrics to "I Understand" begin with:

Sometimes I feel like giving up
Seems like my best, it just ain't good enough
I feel like I've done all that I can do
Do you see, do you care, Lord
All about what I'm goin' through?

They end with:

I am the Lord, I see everything you're going through, yes
Every burden, every trial, every tribulation, yeah
And I understand, I understand, I understand
I am the Lord, I see what you're goin' through,
And, oh, I understand

It could be the most telling message about Nagin's frame of mind following his conviction on 20 criminal counts, including bribery, money laundering and fraud.

Defense attorney Robert Jenkins has vowed to appeal his client's conviction.  Nagin is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan on June 11.  That date is also the former mayor's 58th birthday.
