After Further Review: Saints assisted by reported salary cap increase

Updated:

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - A huge sigh of relief likely came over the Saints as the news was reported that the 2014 NFL salary cap will be higher than originally projected.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the cap will increase 5 percent or $ 7million over last year's cap in 2014. That $130 million figure is $4 million more than the projected $126 million. And for a team as tight up against the mark as the Saints, every little bit helps.

According to overthecap.com, the fresh figures put the Saints at $5.1 million under the cap. That won't be enough to budget for Jimmy Graham's franchise tag or their restricted free agent tenders. But at least it softens the blow.

Before the reported increase, it looked like they would have to part ways with more core veterans to balance their bottom line. Now it appears those veterans cap casualties may be kept to an absolute minimum. I still think even with the new cap figures another veteran could be on their way out, but not much more than that. They may not have to get rid of any more players if they can get a few others to restructure (i.e. Ben Grubbs, Marques Colston or Jahri Evans.)

The new reported salary cap figures won't solve their entire fiscal constraints but ultimately it will save the Saints from being forced to make more tough decisions than they would like.
