NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Two cousins - young men described as "persons of interest" - are being detained in connection with a fatal shooting and armed robbery Tuesday in LaPlace.

St. John the Baptist Sheriff Mike Tregre said the two were stopped about a quarter-mile from the crime scene at the LaPlace Feed and Supply store in the 100 block of Sleepy Redwood Street. He said surveillance video led police to the men.

The incident began just after 2:30 p.m., when Tregre said a woman called to report that she and her husband had been shot. Tregre identified the victims as feed store owners Steve and Constance Finckbeiner, ages 63 and 58, respectively.

Responding deputies said Steve Finckbeiner died at the scene. Constance Finckbeiner was taken  to University Hospital, where she was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. No one else was hurt.

Police learned that at least two suspects entered the store and took the cash register. At some point, they opened fire on the couple.

The investigation is ongoing and involves sheriff's investigators from St. John and St. Charles parishes, as well as U.S. Marshals.
