NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - A local man who mixed the sound in one of biggest movies of the year recently earned a spot on the red carpet. Jon Vogl was nominated for a Golden Reel Award for his work on "12 Years a Slave." It's one of Hollywood's biggest honors in sound, and another honor for Hollywood South.
The dramatic sounds you hear in the movie were mixed and created here in New Orleans inside Second Line Stages on Constance Street.
"We have to isolate ourselves in here from any noise that's happening outside," Vogl said.
He edits and mixes in a state-of-the-art, sound-proof theatre similar to the ones where movie-goers watch the hottest films.
"We built it certified by Dolby to have the standards of any theatre in the country. Anything we play back in here will sound accurate and the same when it's played in another theatre," Vogl said.
The ceiling hangs from springs, and the walls are rigid fiberglass covered with cloth. The room helped him bring amazing detail to the post production sound editing in "12 Years a Slave."
"It starts out when they hand over the film to us in the raw form," Vogl said. "We start plotting out where footsteps occur and where the bugs will be needed, and then we assign those tasks to individual editors and field recordists," he said.
Vogl said his teams will go out to the plantations and record the wind whispering through the leaves and the insects chirping.
At times, the dialogue has to be re-cut and synced to the film. That happens in an ADA recording room off the theatre.
"This is the boom stand," Vogl said, walking into the small room. "We'll open it up and hang a mike, and the talent will stand right here. You can look at the film and you can hear comments from the producers over there."
It was in this room that actress Quvenzhané Wallis tracked her audio for the Masarati commercial that ran during the Super Bowl. Vogl deals with Hollywood types all the time, and sometimes he turns into one. He was on the red carpet for the Motion Pictures Sound Editors Golden Reel Awards.
He was nominated for "12 Years a Slave," but the movie "Gravity" won in his category. Just the nomination for Vogl gives Hollywood South more props.
Vogl Started in L.A. but moved to New Orleans for opportunity a few years ago. He met and married a Marksville native and it sounds like he has settled in for the long haul.
"I"I'm glad to have had apart in this film," he said.
