NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) – The Rex Organization has unveiled this year's King and Queen of Carnival. John. P. Jack Laborde will reign as King of Carnival for 2014. His queen is Carroll Irene Gelderman.
Laborde, a community leader in business, sports, and professional organizations, is the president of All Aboard Development Corporation, a New Orleans-based independent oil and gas exploration and development firm.
Currently, he sits on the corporate boards of Gulf Island Fabrication Inc., where he serves as Chairman; Avoca Inc., a royalty company owning over 16,000 acres in Louisiana, where he serves as president; and the local Advisory Board of Iberia Bank.
Laborde chairs the LSU Health Sciences Center Foundation, sits on the Board of Advisors, Tulane University Science & Engineering School and is the immediate past president of the Sugar Bowl Committee. He is currently the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Sugar Bowl Committee.
An alumnus of Jesuit High School, Mr. Laborde attended Tulane University on a football scholarship, lettering three years. One of the highlights of his university football career was playing for the Green Wave champions in the 1970 Liberty Bowl, Tulane's first bowl appearance since the 1940 Sugar Bowl. At Tulane, he received a B.S. degree in civil engineering and an M.B.A. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
Laborde, who is 64 years old, is married to the former Margaret Lynn "Peggy" LeCorgne. They have two married children. Their son, Eric, is a urologist at Ochsner Clinic and daughter, Blayne Bonham, is an interior designer in Houston, Texas. Eric Laborde was a duke in the Rex Court in 2000. Blayne Laborde was a maid in the Rex Court in 2001.
Carroll Irene Gelderman attended Louise S. McGehee High School, where she served as student body president and Valedictorian. Gelderman attended Columbia University (class of 2015), attended Ca'Foscari University of Venice in the summer of 2012, attended Earth Institute Center of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic in the summer of 2013.
Her major is film studies and her future goal is the work in the film industry. Her hobbies include reading, skiing, water sports, film and music.
Gelderman comes from a long line of Rex Royalty. Her mother, Katherine Waters Gelderman was Queen in 1982. Her grandmother and great-grandmother were maids and six cousins served as dukes and maids.
