One child dead, another in critical condition after two drowning incidents in Slidell

SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) - Police responded to two separate incidents of a drowning child in less than 24-hours.

Early this morning, Slidell Police went to the 100 block of David Drive after a homeowner woke up to a find a 3-year-old facedown in their swimming pool. According to Detective Daniel Seuzeneau, police immediately began a "desperate attempt to bring the child back to life," but the child was pronounced dead after being transported to Slidell Memorial Hospital.

According to police, the child lived across the street from where he was found and had somehow opened the window to his bedroom and get out of his house undetected.

In a separate incident, a 14-year-old boy jumped into Bayou Bonfouca as an alleged dare from his friends Saturday afternoon. Police say that after he hit the water he went under and didn't come back up.

Bystanders on the scene jumped into the water and pulled the teen to safety according to police. Officer Tommy benasco Jr. arrived on the scene shortly after and began CPR, enabling the teenager to breath again. The 14-year-old was transported to Tulane Hospital and remains there in critical condition.

Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith said that whenever a child is involved in a tragic incident it really hit home and affect everyone. "This is any parents worst nightmare. I know these events have not only been hard on the families of the two victims, but have affected everyone involved, including my officers, first responders, and the hospital staff," Smith said. "My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those affected by these tragedies."
