Firefighters find body inside of burning Algiers Point home

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -- New Orleans Police and Fire crews are investigating an incident where a body was found inside of a burning Algiers Point home. The incident occurred Sunday around 4:25 p.m. in the 400 block of Eliza Street.

A New Orleans Fire Department official says that units were called to the scene after a neighbor noticed smoke coming from the burning home. A total of seven units carrying 20 NOFD firefighters responded to the scene. When crews made their way into the home, they immediately found the body of a woman in the front living room near the front door. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to other rooms and had the fire under control at 4:50 p.m. In addition to the NOFD, New Orleans Police officers, Entergy crewmembers and members of the American Red Cross also responded to the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

According to an NOPD spokesperson, the incident has been ruled an unclassified death. The New Orleans Coroner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
