Fat Tuesday shootings not first violence at rapper's concerts

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - The day after the city's biggest party, crime scene tape littered the parking lot outside Mardi Gras World.

New Orleans police say two men were shot to death in the parking lot Tuesday night after a concert inside the float den. The coroner's office identified the victims as 25-year-old Deron Hitchens and 29-year-old Kendrall Fields.

Family members of both men declined to go on camera, but Hitchens' mother said he wasn't the type to get involved in fights.

The murders followed another shooting during rapper Rich Homie Quan's concert inside Mardi Gras World. Police say a man was shot in the shoulder by an unknown gunman and he's now recovering at a local hospital.

This isn't the first time that violence has broken out at one of Quan's shows.

In December, a man was killed at a Rich Homie Quan show in Ohio, and two people were shot at a Missouri concert in January.

A source close to Mardi Gras World tells FOX 8 that the producer of the show was in charge of security and worked with the Port of New Orleans Harbor Police and Mardi Gras World to determine the staffing needs. That source also said security officers patted people down and searched their bags as they entered the building.

New Orleans police say they don't think the shootings inside Mardi Gras World and in the parking lot were related, but their investigation continues.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (504) 822-1111.
