New Canal St. hotel plan faces opposition

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - People who want to build a new hotel at the corner of Canal and Tchoupitoulas don't want the Historic District Landmarks Commission to get in the way of their project's timetable.

According to our partners at New Orleans CityBusiness, developers have applied for demolition permits for six buildings in the area. They say the buildings need to be torn down to make room for their $120 million Marriott hotel.

A Historic District Landmarks Commission committee has already questioned the need to demolish some of the buildings. The committee wants to see developers rework their proposal so that the new hotel will fit within portions of the site that do not contain historic structures.

The demolition request will be considered by the commission March 19.
