Child found safe inside abandoned stolen car

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - A child was found safe inside a stolen car shortly after it was taken Tuesday from Hollygrove, according to New Orleans Police Department spokesman Officer Garry Flot.

Police said at about 7:20 p.m., a 52-year-old man left his 2-year-old grandson inside of his car with the motor running as he went into a store at Olive and Gen. Ogden streets. While he was inside, he heard the car drive off. Minutes later, NOPD received a call of a child alone in a car at Palm and Hamilton Streets.

Police arrived and found the abandoned car with the child inside. The child was unharmed.

Police have no suspect description and are checking the area for witnesses or surveillance video. They said the grandfather has not been charged. The Juvenile Division will conduct a follow-up investigation and will determine if the man will be booked at a later date.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
