Pole vaulting teen from north shore sets high goals

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Devin King knows how to fly.

His mom has been watching him do it for years.

"They told us in the 9th grade, we met a coach who said that he had something that she had never seen," says Nicole King.

Two weeks ago, the senior from Jewel Sumner High School in Kentwood soared.

King was in New York City for the New Balance Indoor Nationals.

After claiming gold with the bar at 16'10, he went for the national record.

"I tried to get over it and when I was over it and I realized I was that high over it, I just started celebrating," he says.

King set a new high school record for indoor pole vault, 17'10.25.

Not one to rest, he turned his attention outdoors, joining hundreds of middle and high school students Saturday for the Sugar Bowl Track and Field Classic.

The annual event brings out some of the best athletes from across the southeast.

Local and state records often topple in the two-day meet.

King's family watched excitedly from the stands.

"I know his last year record here is 17'2," says his mother. "He did 17'5 three weeks ago outdoor so now he holds a 17'5 outdoor PR."

The bar moved up as one by one, athletes stretched to their limit.

King sailed at 17 feet.

"Everything that goes through your head is at practice and you come here to compete and you can't think about anything or else you'll mess up," he says.

King made his highest attempt yet, 17'6, but couldn't clear the bar.

This won't be his last attempt.

"When I get in college, I'm going to try to go to nationals for all that and then try to get good for the Olympics maybe, so that's my ultimate goal," he says.

There's a lot of flying to do in the meantime.
