BELLE CHASSE, LA (WVUE) -

A grand jury has indicted a Belle Chasse mother accused of killing her child by putting hand sanitizer in his feeding tube.

Erika Wigstrom, 20, now faces a first-degree murder charge for allegedly killing her 17-month-old boy, Lucas Ruiz.

Investigators said she confessed to putting sanitizer in her sick, young son's feeding tube to end his suffering in a "mercy killing."

The sanitizer raised the child's blood alcohol content to .280. The legal limit in Louisiana for an adult that is driving is .08. He died a day after the hand sanitizer went into his system.

The Plaquemines Parish District Attorney said his office will not seek the death penalty against Wigstrom.

Her arraignment is set for May 5.
