Louisiana Purchased probe wins National Headliner Award

We're proud to report that FOX 8 News and NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune have won the 2014 National Headliner Award for a documentary or series of stories on a single subject.

"Louisiana Purchased" - our joint investigation into campaign finance in Louisiana - beat out contenders from some of the biggest media markets in the country to win this top award.

Since the middle of 2013, "Louisiana Purchased" has worked to throw open the curtains hiding Louisiana's campaign finance system. We've identified the leading sources of financial support for politicians and candidates in our state. We've highlighted the often-extravagant spending practices of many of Louisiana's leaders. We've even identified apparent violations of campaign finance law and forced lawmakers to surrender hundreds of thousands of dollars in improperly received funding.

That work has won a top award from the Press Club of Atlantic City, which has been running the National Headliner Awards program since 1935, awarding news organizations from across the country for journalistic merit.

TV stations WTVF in Nashville and WCVB in Boston won second and third place in the broadcast division for documentaries or series of stories on a particular subject.

But the first place award went to FOX 8 and NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune. Panelists named Lee Zurik and NOLA.com's Manuel Torres the winners for their work on "Louisiana Purchased."

That work continues on the air, in print and online. With a new legislative session underway, and new opportunities to reform campaign finance laws, our "Louisiana Purchased" probe remains a work in progress.
