NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -
Court documents now reveal that the deaths of a Reserve husband and wife may be a crime that involved a planned abduction and brutal killings.
As the investigation surrounding the deaths of Lakeitha and Kenneth Joseph intensifies, court records show they may have been targets.
Family and friends say they felt something terrible happened to the couple from the moment their home in Reserve was found unlocked and ransacked - and the husband and wife were missing.
"It just crushed me just to know," said friend Joshua Jones. "I can't say what they went through, but just to imagine what they went through hurt me to my heart."
Eleven days after their bodies were found floating in the Intracoastal waterway, court records surfaced showing detectives may be treating the case as a double homicide.
According to a recent search warrant obtained by our partners at NOLA.com | The Times Picayune, the feet of both Kenneth and Lakeitha were bound with blue nylon rope. The document states the rope on Kenneth was "tethered to the handle of a 30-pound kettlebell" in an effort to "weigh his remains down under the surface of the water."
Autopsies on the bodies showed both drowned.
"What type of human could sleep at night, live with themselves knowing that they did that to two human beings?" Jones asked. "To my knowledge, threw them in the water alive tied down."
The search warrant shows police checked a Kenner Walmart where surveillance video shows a man and woman buying two kettlebells on Feb. 19, the morning the couple disappeared. Police also have a receipt for $177.20 worth of merchandise that included the kettle bells, two sweatshirts, three pairs of gripping gloves, fishing line, blue utility rope, two pairs of shoes and a bottle of degreaser.
The items were charged to an American Express credit card.
On Feb. 27, the couple's Dodge minivan was found abandoned in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Atlanta. According to the warrant, inside the was blood evidence, which was collected and submitted for analysis.
Jones said he has no idea why anyone would have wanted to hurt his best friend.
"He didn't have no enemies," he said. "We talked every day. He didn't have no enemies - no enemies whatsoever. Whatsoever."
The NOPD isn't releasing much information on this case, saying only that the investigation is ongoing.
