Home invasion suspect linked to crime in Mid-City

Updated:
NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

People who live along Cleveland Avenue near South Dorgenois still can't believe what happened in their normally quiet Mid-City neighborhood earlier this month.

"It was horrible because I was out in the morning right before the incident happened. It was just shocking to believe," said a neighbor who asked that we not use his name.

The neighbor said he later found out that a woman had been attacked, robbed and sexually assaulted at gunpoint.

Police said 21-year-old James Johnson is responsible.

According to his arrest record, obtained by NOLA.com | The Times Picayune, Johnson approached the woman as she left her home. He forced her into an alley, where he tied her hands behind her back and her feet together before he raped her.

The report states Johnson stole the woman's debit card and then threatened her life if she told anyone about what had happened.

The victim then positively identified Johnson from a photo line-up.

Johnson, though, was already in jail for two robberies and a sexual assault in the Carrollton neighborhood.

"There was an event where a young woman was assaulted in her home," said Chief Ronal Serpas.

Police said they caught Johnson in the act of sexually assaulting and robbing a woman in her Hickory Street home on April 9. Once in custody, they say he confessed to a second home invasion that happened on Panola Street just days before.

Johnson is no stranger to the criminal justice system.

Police said he'd previously been arrested three times for armed robbery and was on probation for an attempted armed robbery until September 2014.

Johnson is currently jailed in lieu of a $1 million bond.
