A state grand jury on Wednesday indicted St. Bernard Parish President David Peralta for sexual battery on his now-estranged wife.
Peralta vehemently denies the allegations.
The grand jury began meeting shortly after 9 a.m. to consider allegations of rape against Peralta.
Sharon Peralta walked into the courthouse with family and her attorney. She testified about the rape she alleges Peralta subjected her to last Fall. Ever since the allegation was made, the pair have been embroiled in a nasty divorce fight over money.
Sharon Peralta has said she fears for her life, while Dave Peralta accuses his wife of lying and bringing shame to the parish.
Dave Peralta has a new lawyer, attorney Steve London, who said he would comment on camera after today's proceedings. Late last month after a hearing relating to the Peralta's divorce proceedings, Dave Peralta said he did nothing wrong.
Dave Peralta was not at the courthouse Wednesday morning. His attorney commented generally about the grand jury process.
He said 9 of the 12 grand jurors would have to vote to indict Dave Peralta or conversely to return a no-true bill. In an interview with our partners at NOLA-The Times Picayune, Dave Peralta admits the couple often engaged in so called "bondage" sex.
Sharon Peralta also acknowledged to the newspaper that they'd use hand and leg restraints. She also accuses a state police captain of failing to arrest her husband on the evening she reported the rape.
