NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu is formally launching his second term. Landrieu is set to take the oath of office Monday at the newly restored Saenger Theatre in New Orleans.
City Council members and other city officials also are to be sworn in at the Saenger, after starting the day at an interfaith service at St. Louis Cathedral in the French Quarter Landrieu won re-election in a landslide victory in February.
His first term was marked by new initiatives to fight violent crime. There also was a program to reduce post-Hurricane Katrina blight. And there were legal battles over expensive, court-ordered reforms of the New Orleans Police Department and the city's jail.
Finding ways to pay for those multi-million dollar reforms will be a major task of his second term.
