NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

A four-alarm fire in a multi-unit building at the edge of Treme left 13 people homeless Saturday, according to a news release from the New Orleans Fire Department.

The fire was first reported just before 5:30 a.m., when firefighters returning from call a for assistance saw smoke in the 1700 block of Esplanade Avenue. Two other firefighters who were passing in the area also called in the fire in and began helping to evacuate the building.

Two residents assisted by knocking on apartment doors and helping other escape.

During the evacuation, an explosion occurred, causing a wall to pull away from the structure and the building to become unstable. Several 911 calls followed and firefighters responded to 1722 Esplanade. The first arriving engine companies found the rear of a three-story, wood frame apartment complex and the attic area fully engulfed in flames.

Eventually the roof and third-floor areas of the building structure collapsed.

Eleven of 12 units were occupied by 13 residents. Neighbors said they thought that two of the 13 residents were not home at the time of the fire, however, neither the owner nor the fire department has been able to reach them.

A fire watch is in place until further notice. Firefighters continue to search the structure as they extinguish hot spots and overhaul the unstable structure.

The American Red Cross is assisting the residents with food, clothing and shelter. No injuries were reported.
