Jefferson Parish Detectives warn of new phone scam circulating within parish

Detectives with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Department are investigating a phone scam that is circulating in Jefferson Parish.

According to police, a 79-year-old woman from River Ridge fell victim to the scam. The caller told the victim that her grand daughter was arrested and that she needed to send $7,000 immediately. The woman was confused about the call and concerned for the well-being of her grand daughter. The caller told the woman to purchase green dot money cards. The cards, which can be used as money, can be purchased at local retail stores. The caller instructed the woman to call back and provide the numbers on the cards, once purchased. The woman provided the numbers to the scammers, who called back multiple times in the future trying to obtain more money from the victim. The woman purchased thousands of dollars worth of additional money cards.

Police learned that the numbers used are (438) 933-4265 and (438) 961-9053. Detectives determined that the numbers are from unknown providers in the Quebec and Montreal areas of Canada. JP Detectives, who have asked for assistance from the FBI, have learned that multiple Jefferson Parish residents have received similar calls.

If you have any information that could help investigators with this case you are asked to call the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Investigations Division at (504) 364-5300.
