Tanning bed ban for minors headed to Jindal's desk

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Anyone under the age of 18 will be banned from using tanning beds in Louisiana if Gov. Bobby Jindal agrees to a bill that received final legislative passage.

The bill by New Orleans Rep. Helena Moreno, a Democrat, headed to the governor's desk Monday after the House unanimously approved minor changes from the Senate.

Supporters say the prohibition will lower risks of skin cancer associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight or tanning lamps and beds.

Current law allowed minors, ages 14 to 18, to use the tanning facilities as long as they had written permission from a parent.

At least five other states ban the use of tanning beds for minors, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
