LSU working to make campus smoke-free by the fall 2014 semester

A committee is working to end tobacco use on LSU's campus beginning this fall. An LSU spokesperson says, the smoking policy committee consists of faculty, student government members, administrators and staff.

The policy is based upon a ruling passed by the Louisiana Legislation during the 2013 session, stating that the new policy had to be in place by August 1, 2014. The LSU spokesperson says the new rule calls for a ban on the use of all forms of tobacco including smokeless tobacco, such as dips and chews, and e-cigarettes by anyone on the campuses of all schools in the LSU system.

Because LSU campus police cannot write tickets for smoking on campus, the committee is working to determine how those who break the rule will be disciplined. Once the committee finishes the policy, it will be sent to the LSU President's Office for approval. Details of the new rule will be made public once it is approved.
