NEW MILFORD, CT (WFSB) -

New Milford police said they were investigating the electrocution of a man following Tuesday's storms.

According to police, 49-year-old Kevin Mateer was driving along Van Car Road around 7 p.m. when live wires fell on his vehicle, causing it to catch on fire.

"It's like a war zone," said David Warren of New Milford. "It's crazy. Trees just uprooted."

Warren said he was beginning his night shift when the storms began.

"You could just watch it come in," said Warren. "It was like sheets of rain. It was just weird to see."

Warren said he was surprised to learn of the man's death.

"It's not a good thing," he said. "I feel for the family."

Mateer was forced to attempt to exit the vehicle to escape the flames, and police believe he was electrocuted as the live wires electrified his car.

The victim was rushed to New Milford Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The incident remains under investigation.

The storm may have only lasted for an hour or two, but the damage left behind was expected to take days to clean up. Trees were uprooted and branches were snapped. Cleanup crews said power and telephone lines were thrown from their bases and scattered on the ground.

"I lived in Sharon when the tornado went through, but this is probably the worst that I can remember," Warren said.
