NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Tea Party favorite Sarah Palin weighed in on Louisiana's U.S. Senate race Thursday, making a surprise appearance on behalf of Republican candidate Rob Maness.

"Rob Maness is not beholden to any political machine," Palin said before a fired-up crowd of Maness supporters. "He is beholden to We the People."

The speech came as the Tea Party Express announced its endorsement of Maness, who is among the Republicans challenging Sen. Mary Landrieu.

Palin said Maness was not part of "that permanent political establishment, that permanent class in D.C. that's out of touch with what we believe."

"My opponent is not any one person," Maness said. "It's the status quo in Washington."

The Maness event piggy-backed onto the three-day Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans.

It turned into a battle of endorsements, as U.S. Representative Bill Cassidy announced he had won the backing of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
