Jindal signs legislation allowing teachers to accept gifts

Parents of public school students can now allow their children to give teachers a gift and not violate state law.

Governor Jindal signed House Bill 500 into law on Tuesday allowing teachers to accept gifts that do not exceed $25 in value. The bill states that in a calendar year, gifts to teachers cannot exceed $75.

State Education Superintendent John White was in New Orleans on Tuesday expressing his support of the move.

"I think a ban on giving teachers gifts doesn't make a whole heck of a lot of sense," said White. "I'm happy teachers are able to receive gifts. they should have been able to receive gifts a long time before this."

The change takes effect August 1, just in time for the new school year.
