Officials: Lafourche levee breach put 60 homes at risk

Lafourche Parish President Charlotte Randolph had declared a state of emergency due to a levee breach.

The breach happened on Tuesday evening in the Belle Terre area of Choupic, located in the northern part of the parish.

The breach put approximately 60 homes at risk, according to officials in Lafourche.

Randolph says the past week's heavy rains have put a strain on the levee and caused problems in nine areas. All but one has been stabilized as of Tuesday night.

The public works director will hold a meeting next week to discuss ways to better strengthen the levee.
