Saints C Goodwin striving to win back his old job

METAIRIE, La. (AP) - Jonathan Goodwin figures he's probably a better center now than when he left New Orleans after the 2010 season.

The key is how well he can hold up physically at age 35.

Goodwin has played in the past three NFC championship games with San Francisco, going to one Super Bowl during that span.

This week, he returned to the Saints as a free agent, providing second-year center Tim Lelito with an experienced, successful competitor for the starting job.

Goodwin says it's "easy" to serve as both Lelito's mentor and competitor. Goodwin says older players once did it for him, and now it's his turn to work constructively with younger players.

But Goodwin adds that he wouldn't have returned for a 13th season if he didn't want to play.
