Commuters should prepare for delays as north shore construction begins

MANDEVILLE, LA (WVUE) - Some north shore commuters can expect delays as major construction gets underway Monday.

Crews are scheduled to begin resurfacing the busy East Causeway Approach in Mandeville between Monroe Street and U.S. 190.

Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou said all lanes will remain open during the peak morning and evening commute times, but drivers should be prepared for lane closures at other times during the project.

Later this summer, Causeway officials will begin testing guardrail replacements on the southbound span. The Commission is working with Texas A&M on a solution to improve the areas where the protective barrier is only 25 inches high. It's not high enough to stop trucks and SUVs from going over the side. Causeway officials will test new rails the summer in two or three spots.

The Causeway Commission would like to replace the guardrails in both directions, but some of the proposals run as high as $50 million.

Crews hope to complete the resurfacing work by the time school starts in September.
