Woman surrenders after standoff in Old Jefferson

JEFFERSON, LA (WVUE) - An hours-long standoff ended peacefully Tuesday in Old Jefferson.

Deputies said 44-year-old Ashley Sheppard surrendered at about 11:30 p.m. after barricading herself inside her home on Dodge Avenue.

Authorities said the standoff began at 8 p.m. after Sheppard fired a gun at her sister-in-law outside the home. Sheppard then went into her house and refused to come out until negotiators convinced her to surrender.

Deputies said no one was hurt.

"It's a very successful operation," said Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman Cmdr. John Fortunato. "And it's the type of operation that we like to see, this type of ending where no one had to use force. And she peacefully surrendered. That's what we want - a peaceful resolve."

Shepphard was arrested and booked her with aggravated assault and illegal discharge of a firearm.
