Man arrested in cyclist's death had unrestrained kids in car

METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - A man who had three unrestrained children in his vehicle was arrested Thursday in connection with the death of a motorcyclist in Metairie.

Darwin Ferrera, 26, of Metairie, was booked with vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated, reckless operation, driving without a license and three child restraint violations.

Just after 8:30 p.m., officers responded to an accident involving a motorcycle at the intersection of Clearview Parkway and the South I-10 Service Road. Investigators determined that Ferrera was turning onto the service road when he struck the cyclist.

The victim, identified as Ewin Zelaya, was taken to East Jefferson General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A State Police trooper witnessed the crash and saw Ferrera try to flee the scene, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. Ferrera was prevented from driving away because the motorcycle was wedged under his SUV.

There was no immediate word on bond.
