Child killed, father and others injured in Assumption Parish crash

NAPOLEONVILLE, LA (WVUE) - An 8-year-old child was killed and two other children and their father were injured Sunday when the car they were riding in traveled off the road and rolled over, ejecting all of the occupants, according to a news release from Louisiana State Police Troop C.

No one in the car was wearing a seatbelt, and police suspect impairment was a factor.

The accident happened just before 9 p.m. on La. Highway 1 near Howard Lane in Assumption Parish. The car, driven by Brian Gilton, 26, of Napoleonville, traveled off the right side of the highway, struck a culvert and a utility pole and then overturned.

Gilton and his three children, ages 4, 5 and 8, were thrown from the car. Gilton was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital with moderate injuries. The 8-year-old was pronounced dead on the scene. The other two children were taken to Thibodaux Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

Blood was taken from Gilton and the test results are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.

The crash remains under investigation.
