Hazardous material spill closes portion of Canal Street in Mid-City

The New Orleans Fire Department is working to clean a hazardous material spill after a garbage truck leaked between 50-60 gallons of hydraulic fluid.

Officials say that a garbage truck has leaked approximately 50-60 gallons of hydraulic fluid spanning a four block stretch of lake-bound Canal Street from North Carrolton Ave. to North Solomon Street.

Haz-mat crews and suppression personnel are currently on the scene.

Authorities say lake-bound Canal Street between Carrollton Ave. and N. Solomon Street will remain closed until the clean-up effort is deemed sufficient and cleared by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.

Drivers should expect delays in and around this area of Canal Street during the clean-up effort.
