An early morning two-alarm fire damaged a Central City church Thursday.

The fire broke out shortly before 3 a.m. at Greater St. Matthews Baptist Church in the 1600 block of S. Rampart Street at Euterpe. It was extinguished in less than an hour, fire officials said.

The church's interior sustained significant smoke and water damage.

Fire investigators said no one was injured, and the cause is under investigation. They said the church's unique and valuable Hammond B3 organ with a Leslie cabinet is sitting in water, but it is likely salvageable.

At daylight, parishioners began gathering outside the church, crying and comforting each other, according to FOX 8 News reporter Carolyn Scofield. The pastor called the damage "unbelievable." He said people were at the church until about 10 p.m. Wednesday for bible study and choir practice, but he has no idea what could have sparked the fire.
