NY nears approving medical marijuana

ALBANY, NY (WRGB/CNN) - Applause rang out in Albany on Friday as the New York state senate passed a bill legalizing medical marijuana.

The measure covers about a dozen conditions including cancer, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, HIV and AIDS.

It does not allow medical marijuana to be smoked.

Approved ways of taking the drug include vapor, pills or oil.

Many of those on hand to cheer the bill's passage have family members in need of medical marijuana treatments.

The state assembly passed the bill earlier on Friday.

Democrat Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to sign it into law.
