COVINGTON, LA (WVUE) - The mother of an autistic teenager, who was viciously beat in a random attack, has been arrested for welfare fraud.
Christine Kelley, 38, was arrested on June 20 after a Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services investigation into benefits her family received from the state's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.
The state accuses Kelley of lying on her benefit application, saying she was divorced and not claiming her husband's income. She has received $55,000 in fraudulent SNAP benefits, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.
Kelley was arrested on a felony theft warrant in downtown Covington.
In May, Kelley's 17-year-old son had his jaw broken in an attack blamed on the 'knockout game.' Officers later arrested two juveniles for the incident.
After news of the attack spread across the metro area, total strangers gave the family money and offered words of encouragement as the teenager recovered.
Kelley has been released on bond. There is no word when she is due in court.
