"I made one call and got my problem resolved. I called FOX 8," explained Kenner consumer Jose Hidalgo.
He's all smiles now, but for months, he says he battled a monthly charge on a department store credit card bill.
"I noticed a charge of $10.95 for an insurance policy that I had supposedly took out with Stonebridge Life Insurance Company," said Hidalgo. That monthly insurance charge was for accidental death and dismemberment benefits.
"I don't remember doing this," explained Hidalgo.
A letter from Stonebridge Life in December explained that when the insurance company mailed Hidalgo an offer that could lead to a gift card, he called their toll free number and agreed to be enrolled in the insurance.
"I didn't recall that, and I said I don't think I would take any additional life insurance because I already have enough life insurance through my job," said Hidalgo.
Coverage started last March, more than a year ago, along with the monthly charges. Unable to cancel that coverage and get a refund on his own, Hidalgo called the FOX 8 Defenders staffed with volunteers from the National Council of Jewish Women.
"Three weeks later I got a phone call from the Stonebridge Life Insurance company, and they say 'oh, Mr. Hidalgo this is such and such with Stonebridge Life Insurance Company, and I got some good news,' and I said really, is that so? She goes 'yeah, we gonna' you know give you a refund on that,' and I said oh good, thank you," explained Hidalgo. He says the company ended up crediting his department store credit card $110 for all those months.
The bottom line here is pay close attention to your credit card statements. If something doesn't look familiar, question it right away.
