HOUMA, LA (WVUE) - A woman was arrested Monday after police said she left her child locked in her car while she went into a Houma store to buy cigarettes and pay a bill.
Cara Dubois, 27, of Larose, faces one count of child desertion.
At about noon, Houma police officers were called to a store on Grand Caillou Road, where they found a 21-month-old child locked inside a parked car. Dubois exited the store shortly after officers arrived. She unlocked the car door and the child was found in good condition. Police said the car interior was hot.
Dubois said the car was running when she went into the store. It was later learned that the car automatically stops running after 10 minutes.
Dubois was taken to the parish jail awaiting trial or bond. The child was released to the father.
